HANOI, Vietnam — The wife of a Vietnamese activist lawyer who tried to sue the Communist country's prime minister says her husband will stand trial later this month on charges he spread propaganda against the state.
Nguyen Thi Duong Ha says her husband, Cu Huy Ha Vu, is set for trial March 24 in Hanoi. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.
Vu was arrested in Ho Chi Minh City last November.
In 2009, he attempted to filed a suit against Prime Minster Nguyen Tan Dung for allegedly violating laws by approving a controversial Chinese-built bauxite mining project. Court officials dismissed the lawsuit, saying they didn't have the authority to try the prime minister.
Vietnam's government tolerates no challenge to its rule. Hanoi maintains only lawbreakers are jailed.
